Thirty-Six Fudo Temples in the Kinki Region (近畿三十六不動尊)

The designation "Thirty-Six Fudo Temples in the Kinki Region" denotes 36 sacred sites that enshrine Fudo-son (Fudo Myoo (Acala, one of the Five Wisdom Kings)) in the prefectures of Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Wakayama, Shiga and Nara. The sacred sites were selected in 1979, mainly by Koji Kenshokai, who incorporated opinions from the general public regardless of any particular school of religion.

The number 36 was derived from the fact that there were 36 doji (children) who were Fudo Myoo's kenzoku (messengers). It also represents 36 bonno (earthly human desires), and implies that earthly desires can be erased by making a round of pilgrimages to the 36 temples.
