Emperor Gomomozono (後桃園天皇)
Emperor Gomomozono (August 5, 1758 - December 6, 1779) was the hundred eighteenth Emperor during the Edo period. (his reign was from May 23, 1770 to December 16, 1779.)
His posthumous name was Hidehito.
Since the Emperor died suddenly, it was counted later than the actual date that he died while preparing to succeed to the Imperial throne, the period of his era continued after he died (The collections of the Imperial Household Agency, 'The record of the death of Gomomozonoin').
Genealogy
He was the first Prince of Emperor Momozono. His mother was the chancellor (chief advisor to the emperor) and the Grand Minister, Kaneka ICHIJO's daughter and a high-ranking lady in the court; an empress of Momozono, Kyoraimon in FUJIWARA no Tomiko. Imperial Prince Fushimi no Miya Sadamochi was his half younger brother.
Brief Personal History
He became Crown Prince on April 6, 1768 and succeeded to the throne after his aunt, Empress Gosakuramachi, passed the throne to him.
The Emperor was not well and he died when he was twenty two years old while he was in power in 1779. Since his only child was Imperil Princess Yoshiko, the Imperial family adopted a child from the kan-in no Miya family in haste, (Imperial Prince Morohito of kan-in no Miya family, he changed his name to Tomohito after the enthronement), who later succeeded to the throne as Emperor Kokaku. Later on, Imperial Princess Yoshiko married Emperor Kokaku.

He became Crown Prince on February 15, 1759. He received to title Prince by Imperial order on June 9, 1759. He officially became Crown Prince on April 6, 1768. He had a coming-of-age ceremony on September 19, 1768. He succeeded to the throne on May 23, 1770. The Great Thanksgiving Service (a ceremony held after the Enthronement of an Emperor) was held on December 14, 1771.
