Kose no Maro (巨勢麻呂)

KOSE no Maro (date of birth unknown - February 7, 717) was a noble of the Nara period. His main name was KOSE no Asomi. His home ground was Kose-go, Takaichi-gun, Yamato Province. His status was Jusanmi chunagon (Junior Third Rank, Associate Chief of the Councillor of State). His grandfather was Omi OHARIDA and his father was Shiden OHARIDA, who was the third Kyoshiki (the Capital Bureau) of the Asuka Court. KOSE no Nademaro, who was Sangi (Councilor), Dainagon (Chief councilor) and Junii (Junior Second Rank) of state, was his cousin.

KOSE no Maro was appointed to Jushiinoge (Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade) Minbukyo (Minister of Popular Affairs) during the reign of Emperor Mommu (on April 22, 705 on the old calendar), and to Sadaiben (major controller of the left) during the reign of Empress Genmei (March 13, 708 on the old calendar). He was appointed to Shoshiinoge (Senior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade) on September 7, 708 and to Chinto Shogun (generalissimo who subdues the 'barbarians') in 709; he went to the northern part of Japan to conquer Ezo (northerners). He was promoted to Shoshiinojo (Senior Fourth Rank Upper Grade) in 710. He was promoted to Jusanmi (Junior Third Rank) on February 26, 713 and then to Chunagon (Middle Counsellor) on July 1, 715.

He passed away on February 7, 717.
